The new Iranian president apparently failed to consider that President Obama might actually accept his overture to meet on the sidelines of the UN general Assembly and even shake hands. We imagine that President Rouhani was advised that Obama was willing to meet, and, after gulping, said, “Let’s get the heck out of here.” The Iranians declared that it would be too complicated to meet. Oil prices fell and rose on the prospect for a meeting and the subsequent dashed hopes for a breakthrough. Several meetings between Iran and the main UN players to discuss their nuclear program are still set to occur.
